Actor, Ncuti Gatwa (pronounced Shooti Gat-Wa) has been announced as the new Doctor for the ongoing Doctor Who series today. He will be taking on the mantle from Jodie Whittaker (the 13th Doctor).
Whittaker assumed the role in 2017. As it stands at the moment, there are 23 episodes and 3 seasons. Quite a decline compared to previous versions of The Doctor, Peter Capaldi as an example also stayed on for 3 seasons but had a staggering 40 episodes compared to Whittaker's 23.
A shame for fans that there is a decline in episodes as she proved to be phenomenal as the first female Doctor.
A great role model for all the young female whovians! I'm not embarrassed to admit that I have a doll of Jodie's doctor and her sonic screwdriver in my home. Now, for the question that is on nearly everybody's lips, who is Ncuti Gatwa?
Gatwa was born in Nyarugene, Kigali, Rwanda. Ncuti has devulged in an interview that his family moved from Rwanda, due to fleeing genocide they moved to Scotland as refugees.
In a different interview this time with The Big Issue, Ncuti disclosed that he had spent months prior to his big break crashing on friend's sofas "I didn't have a home. I was homeless. The only thing stopping me from being on the streets was the fact that I had friends. But you can use up that goodwill. Or feel scared to ask people for help. Your pride kicks in." The big breakout role that he acquired was the ever popular Netflix Original Series Sex Education. (2019-Ongoing)
Ncuti portrays a flamboyant homosexual teenager named Eric Effiong, whom is from a religous Nigerian background with very traditional family values. He is one of the show's central characters and is rather iconic, who doesn't love a sassy queen that slays?!
Eric has a tough time on the show (Series 1 Episode 5 I'm looking at you) despite his difficult times, Eric is always unapologetically himself and stays true to who he is no matter what, which is a powerful and strong message especially to those that need to hear it! I can only hope that his character has helped and brought comfort to those struggling with their sexuality and identity. Ncuti Gatwa has won 4 awards for his portrayal of Eric which includes the BAFTA, Scotland Award for Best Actor in 2020. Unlike Eric, Ncuti has never publicly spoken about his sexuality and is believed to be currently single. I for one cannot wait to see what energy he brings to his version of The Doctor!!
Ncuti will be the third Scottish actor to portray The Doctor in the revival series. According to Ncuti his Scottish accent only really comes out when he's back in Scotland.
Jodie Whittaker's final special episode in Doctor Who is scheduled to air sometime in Autumn, although with no confirmed set date as of yet. What are your thoughts of our new Doctor?
