Every year there is always a new trend to follow in some form. 2017 has been no exception with the very popular mermaid and unicorn trends. Particularly in the world of cosmetics. The trends have influenced beauty brands to introduce to us fantasy tones in palettes, highlighters and more. In this review I will talk about two lip products to help you find your inner unicorn! Lets get started.
Make Up Revolution is brought to us by Tam Beauty. The brand is a very affordable high street name in the world of cosmetics. The fact that their products are at reasonable prices makes them appeal to all. Even famous vloggers and Youtubers have jumped on board when it comes to purchasing products from Make Up Revolution. Some include Zoella, The Real Reviewer - also known as the hilarious Ellie Norcliffe, and Sophie from SophDoesNails. Sophie even has her own products within the Make Up Revolution range which are amazing.

The product I will be reviewing from Make Up Revolution will be the Retro Luxe Holographic Lip Kit in the shade Unicorn Dream. The product itself I believe is around the £6 mark which I purchased from Superdrug. For that price you will get a lilac shimmer lip liner and a lovely holographic translucent lipgloss. Which I think is pretty good value for money. The idea of this product is basically a contour kit for your lips. Both products within the kit can be used separately of course but they are meant to be used together to create a lovely dreamy unicorn themed lip look.

Now lets move on to the second of the products I will be talking about in this review. The Lip Tripper Holographic Lipgloss from brand W7. W7 is, again a budget brand in beauty. Even though they are a lot cheaper than most make up brands out there I still personally like their products. Some can be very hit and miss but aren't all brands like that? The Lip Tripper does not come as part of any kind of kit. It is simply a standalone product. I purchased mine for around £3 at TK Maxx. Of course prices may vary elsewhere. The lipgloss is like the one from Revolution's lip kit is very shimmery and translucent with opalescent tones.
Now the fun part. Time to compare the two lipgloss products from each brand.
Packaging
Make Up Revolution's is part of a lip kit so it does come within a cardboard box. The box does scream 'Luxe' as described. A plain white box with bands of shiny copper/rose gold around it with a big pair of biting lips on the front that appear to be modelling the product. The brand does this for all of their lip contour kits. They provide a pair of biting lips on the front to show an example of what the product looks like when being worn. This is slightly annoying for the Unicorn Dream shade. The picture of the lips with the product on looks absolutely nothing like the end result when I tested out the product.
This picture (to the left) is what is displayed on the front of the packaging for Unicorn Dream. It appears to be a dark pink toned glittery look.
The photo (to the right) of this text is me wearing the full kit. This is the finished look when using both products provided (the gloss and liner) as instructed by the brand. The result gave me a very pretty lilac toned shimmery lip. It is lovely but it does not look anything like what is advertised. Why the brand didn't use a lilac colour on the box I will never know as it's clear that with the two products inside that you will not get the look that is advertised.
The lipgloss from the kit is what I am interested in for this review. It is in clear tube and has a lovely metallic copper/rose gold coloured lid which is attached to the applicator. It is simple but very pretty.
As seen earlier in this review the packaging for the W7 Lip Tripper Holographic Lipgloss is simple yet sleek. A clear square shaped bottle with the contents of the product inside with a simple matte black lid that you unwind to get off - like the lipgloss from Make Up Revolution the applicator is attached.
Applicators
Both gloss products have wand applicators attached to their lids. which is probably the easiest way to apply lipgloss.
Colour/Appearance and Consistency
As seen by the picture above. I did swatches of both gloss products on the inside of my forearm right next to each other. You can see that even though they are the same product from different brands there is quite a difference between the two. It is clear that the W7 Lip Tripper is much more sparkly than its rival from Make Up Revolution. Unicorn Dream from the lip kit is much denser with its shimmer particles so it has a much more of a sheen to it rather than a glitter effect. The Unicorn Dream gloss is also a lot thicker in consistency compared to the Lip Tripper. On my arm I wasn't keen on how sticky the Unicorn Dream felt. So I thought of course it will look and feel different on my lips so I then applied both glosses as normal.
This picture (on the left ) shows me wearing the Make Up Revolution Unicorn Dream gloss.
The photograph (on the right) shows me wearing the W7 Lip Tripper gloss. Just as the swatches on my arm has previously shown, the Lip Tripper from W7 definitely stood out a lot more. The Unicorn dream one gave me a nice gentle shimmer on my lips but this time didn't feel as sticky which was nice. The W7 gloss gave my lips a more vibrant sparkly coverage. I must also note that the Lip Tripper also lasted longer too.
Of course it does depends on what you would personally expect from a holographic/unicorn lip product. Some people prefer a more subtle sheen compared to a glitter party on your lips. As much as I absolutely love Make Up Revolution and adore many of their other products, W7 won this round. Since purchasing the two I have found that I am wearing the Lip Tripper far more frequently than the Unicorn Dream gloss. But please bare in mind that the Unicorn Dream gloss is part of a contour lip kit, so it is supposed to be used in conjunction with the lilac lip liner that is provided. So I have been wearing it as the liner and gloss together on a regular basis as I love the lilac colour.
So as holographic lip glosses lets give them some scores out of 5.
The Make Up Revolution Luxe holographic lip contour kit - Unicorn Dream (Gloss only) 3.5/5 Stars
The W7 Lip Tripper Holographic Lipgloss 4/5 Stars
There really wasn't that much of a difference in it at all. Both are still highly rated products by me and they bare are products that I will continue to use and rave about to others.
I hope you have found this review helpful. And I will be back soon reviewing more make up from the Unicorn trend.
See you soon Roomies!
