DC Movie News at CinemaCon 2022

Updated: May 21, 2022

CinemaCon is well under way at Caeser's Palace in Laz Vegas. The event began on Monday 25th April and will come to a close on Thursday 28th April.

For those of you that may not be familiar with CinemaCon, it is a huge event where movie production companies gather to present their upcoming releases to cinema franchises around the world.

One presentation that we found particularly interesting was the Warner Bros. Pictures presentations to showcase their upcoming DC comics movie projects.

So here is the news we were given.

The Batman

Director Matt Reeves made a special appearance at the event to share his presentation about the potential of a sequel to The Batman. After a huge success with the film earning a whopping $759 million the global box office, it has now been officially confirmed by Reeves himself that he will be returning to direct and write the film's sequel along with the return of the entire team. There is not yet any promise of which plot lines the sequel will surprise us with or what infamous DC villains will be set to antagonise Robert Pattinson's Batman. Many are expecting The Joker played by The Eternals star Barry Keoghan as the role was teased at the end of the first film. There are also speculation that we could see the return of The Riddler played by Paul Dano as well as the potential for an introduction of other well associated Batman villains such as Mr. Freeze, Bane or even The court of Owls. The possibilities are endless.

The Flash

The flash has been a project that fans have been really looking forward to. However the film has now been delayed multiple times, causing fans to worry if the film will release at all. Especially with the addition of negative media attention that the film's star Ezra Miller has received of late regarding his numerous arrests in Hawaii. Although Warner Bros. pictures seemingly put our minds at ease by revealing a new logo for the film which features a black lightning bolt in the image rather than the well known golden yellow one that is associated with the scarlet speedster. Could this be a hint at a potential appearance of The Black Flash? Have they secretly informed the fans of the film's villain? It gives fans something to talk about to create their own theories about the movie. A sizzle reel was also shown of some new footage including Barry Allen going back in time to see what appears to be his mother Nora Allen in their family home before then continuing to him in his den watching footage of himself, before images move on to show not one, not two, but SEVEN Batman suits, Michael Keaton and Ben Affeck are also shown as well as Michael Shannon returning to his role as Zodd (previously seen in Man of Steel with Henry Cavill) and lastly we get to see our big screen Supergirl who is played by actress Sasha Calle.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods

The trailer for the film was shown, apparently opening with Billy Batson (Zachary Levi) on a date with Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), which later then turns out to be a dream conjured up by the wizard Shazam. The trailer also features actresses Lucy Liu and Dame Helen Mirren as the film's villains (Kalypso & Hespera). The trailer is also said to show a variety of mythical beasts including dragons and then further shows the titular character to make a humorous reference to The Fast & The Furious film franchise. This is going to be a crazy, magical, wild ride!

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom

Many are eager to see the return of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry aka Aquaman (although, maybe the same can't be said for co-star Amber Heard as Mera due to the controversy surrounding the actress of late in the media). Plenty of new footage was said to have been shown at CinemaCon 2022 for this movie, including new sites, new characters and even a character development for well known Aquaman villain Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen)in his return with new ancient powers. Patrick Wilson is also making his return as King Orm as the character has to work alongside Aquaman in order to defeat Black Manta and his army.

Black Adam

Actor Dwayne Johnson took to the stage to share some more information about his upcoming Black Adam movie. He teased that "Black Adam is the Dirty Harry of superheroes" before then revealing new footage of the film including lots of images of actress Quintessa Swindell in her role of Maxine Hunkell aka Cyclone. Some of the footage shows parts of the trailer that we have already seen including Black Adam being found in the mountains before then being reborn as a God. However more interestingly, much more of Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate was shown. This is a character that many are most excited too see appear in this movie.

This was all that was featured for upcoming DC projects, however there were also moments where someone had asked the question "What about Superman?" a question that many have been asking for years since we last saw the character appear in Zac Snyder's Justice League movie. Many comments from film makers and production companies had apparently made comments off record about the future of the Man of Steel, but the one comment that was noted was "progress is being made". Make of that what you will. We can only speculate as to just exactly what that may mean.
