The year is 1995 and after a few shorts, Disney and Pixar release it's first full length feature film. Of course that is none other than the infamous Toy Story!
I remember as a child, I would watch this on repeat, making sure that I rewound the VHS after the end of each showing in order to prepare for the next. This was the film that started my love for Pixar and it has only continued to grow over the years.
Fast Forward to 2022 and we as fans finally have an origin story of Buzz Lightyear, a Space Ranger destined with a task to save what remains of his people and world as he knows it.
Lightyear as a whole is a very beautifully produced film, with stunning visuals and realism, there is both humour and heavy emotion, but not as much as you may expect in comparison to other Pixar titles.
The voice cast was absolutely amazing! Captain America actor Chris Evans took on the monumental task of voicing Buzz. Very big space boots to fill after the character was originally brought to life by Tim Allen. In all honesty, he did a great job and his voice at times sounded very similar to the tone of Allen's. Even though I loved the casting choices of Lightyear, I (and I'm sure many others)/ would have loved to have seen Allen reprise his role as the world's most beloved Space Ranger.

In terms of the film's length, it is relatively short with a run time of only 105 minutes, but that doesn't stop it from being an absolute blast! From the get go, there's action and storytelling at it's finest which continues throughout the entirety of the film.
However, there are a few things that I wasn't a fan of. Although Taika Waititi's character had some hilarious dialogue, he was by far the most annoying and irritating character I've ever seen on a screen. Although I speak from an adult's perspective on this and the film is predominantly aimed towards a much younger and newer generation of Buzz Lightyear fans. I have no doubt that a child watching the film would think quite the opposite of the character as he comes across as clumsy and silly, and younger viewers love that sort of thing. On the plus side, the addition of new character Sox (Peter Sohn), a robotic feline gifted to Buzz from a friend to keep him company, was actually a pretty genius move!

In terms of the film's plot there were also a few things that occurred which I didn't completely agree with and just left me asking more questions. But I'll leave it at that as I don't intend on delving into spoiler territory.

All in all, I loved this film! I had such a good ride throughout the journey of Buzz. If you're a fan of Toy Story then yes, go and see this film! It will make you feel like a child once more bringing all the nostalgic feels along with it. And if you're a fan of Captain America, there are also some cleverly added references to Chris Evan's time as The First Avenger including a line from a new character stating "on your right!" a parallel to the infamous phrase "on your left" that originated from the Captain America movies.
This is a film that I can 100% say is a recommended watch and I am happy to score Lightyear a solid 3.5 planets out of 5!
