Ms. Marvel: Who is the MCU's newest Hero?

On 8th June 2022, Marvel Studios and the ever popular Disney+ streaming service introduced the world to a live action portrayal of Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani).

Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) is an American Muslim teen living with her family that follow many traditional cultural values all while living in New Jersey in the USA. There's also something else you should know about Kamala Khan, she's a huge fan of The Avengers, more particularly Captain Marvel. She is essentially a Marvel fan within the Marvel Comics world.

Kamala's first appearance in Marvel Comics was back in August 2013. She was also the very first Muslim character to headline a comic book/graphic novel. A huge step forward when it comes to adding diversity to the franchise of heroes and villains and what an addition she is!

How Did Kamala Become Ms. Marvel?

Like all other superheroes, Kamala of course has her own superhero origin story. There are a couple of different variations when it comes to the origin of her powers.

The most well known cause of Kamala's powers comes from a potentially life threatening substance named Terrigen mist was released into the world. Some stories include the release of the mist coming from Black Bolt of The Inhumans, whereas the latest Avengers game had shown the source of this mist coming from the organisation A.I.M (Advanced Idea Mechanics).

Humans with a dormant inhuman gene, such as Kamala had basically had the gene awoken by the mist and long story short, this is how Ms Khan was able to gain her new abilities and become what is known as a Polymorph where she is able to change the shape and size of her body and limbs and even heal herself when returning to her original human form.

However In the Disney+ series created by Marvel Studios Kamala's powers were discovered in a completely different way.

She inherited these abilities upon the discovery of an ancient family heirloom. A Bracelet from her grandmother. In this instance, Kamala's abilities are now more cosmic in appearance rather than physical changes to her actual body.

The bracelet is said to have a strong link to the Kree, a species that we were first introduced to within the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Brie Larson's Captain Marvel.

The Ms. Marvel series will be preparing us for what is to come within the MCU as Iman Vellani has been confirmed to appear in the upcoming film "The Marvels" alongside Brie Larson and Wandavision's Teyonah Paris also. Something that we are definitely looking forward to hearing more about here The Realview Room.

So in a nutshell, this is a simple overview of just who Kamala Khan is. The Ms. Marvel comics and graphic novels are a great read and we can highly recommend them. Also other than the origin of Kamala's powers and type of abilities that she now possesses, the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series has been quite comic book accurate so far. Which is great fun for fans of the comics to enjoy as they point out similarities and links between the two. Which let's face it, us Marvel fans just love to do that. Myself very much included.

We are loving the new Ms. Marvel series so far and can't wait to see more of Iman Vellani as Kamala in action in future episodes.
